According to The Weather Channel, Hurricane Charley is expected to hit somewhere north or south of us tomorrow. That puts us smack in the middle of the projected path. I have to say, I've never been a scaredy cat when it comes to hurricanes. Having lived in Florida all of my life (with the exception of a brief stint in KS -- but we like to pretend that never happened), I've grown accustomed to this time of year and, I hate to say it, but I think hurricanes are exciting!
The only hurricane I've ever been in was back in 1979 with Hurricane David. School was canceled, which was nice. The storm was hardly anything at all, even though it was predicted to be fierce.
Of course there have always been close calls - the scariest was definitely Hurricane Floyd - I was in KS at the time and it was supposed to hit the Daytona Beach area about 10 days before my wedding. Luckily, it only skirted the coast, although it did take the Main Street Pier with it.
After Hurricane Andrew (see photos), my dad had to go down there to help restore electricity - he was there cleaning up for 2 months (See pics below). I imagine if Charley was a Category 4 like Andrew was, we'd be the hell out of here! We're still not sure what we're going to do - leave or stay - will know for sure tonight when we have a better idea of where this f*cker is heading. In the meantime, I'll remain cautious but a tad bit excited.
