I tried to save money by coloring my own hair. Can someone please tell me what in the world I was thinking?!? First, I colored and highlighted it using Loreal Color Expert -- the highlights turned orange.
Yes...I said it right. Orange.
I looked like my old cat, Riley. So, I call the Loreal hotline and they tell me that to correct it, I need to get a different kind (Excellence) in a specific color. I go to the store yesterday to pick it up and my favorite CVS checkout girl was there. Fun! Anyhow, I colored my hair last night and now my whole friggin' head of hair is orange. Lovely!
So, by thinking I was saving money, I've actually spent $30 on products that didn't work and on top of that, now have an appointment for a corrective coloring tomorrow (which was the only service that didn't have a price listed at the salon, which means it's probably more money than I think is reasonable to pay, but dammit, I'll pay it because I don't want to look like a freak). Thank God I didn't do this the day before the reunion is all I have to say.
Next time I want to save money, I'll just switch to Geico.
In other news, one of my best friends is going in today to have a large tumor (size of a softball) removed from her ovary. Her doctors are pretty certain that it's malignant and if so, she's going to have to start undergoing chemotherapy treatments right away. This is someone who doesn't deserve this (not that anyone does, but some are less deserving than others)...she's had such a hard life and now has 2 children who need her. And she's only 32.
The only positive is that the thought of what she's going through makes me grateful that I only have hair to bitch and moan about. Everyone should be so lucky.

OMG!!! I had the exact same thing happen to me!
I still color my own hair. I usually let professionals highlight my hair, though. Both times I attempted to do it myself ended badly. I either had orange streaks or one thick "skunk" streak.
I have found that using professional quality stuff actually gives me better results when I color my hair myself. And it doesn't cost any more than the box stuff at the store (in fact, it's cheaper). I go to Sally Beauty supply and get the developer, the color, and the supplies I need. The developer lasts for more than one use, and the applicator is dishwasher safe so I reuse that too. I even have reusable gloves. So it's cheaper the second and third time you color your hair.
Anyway- I use the color gems, which is Loreal, but I promise its better than the crap they sell at the drug stores.
I think you should stick with your appointment tomorrow, though. It's too hard to fix those kind of boo boos on your own.
Good luck!
I hope your friend heals quickly and that the tumor is actually benign.
Oh no. I'm so sorry to hear about your friend. How scary for her and her family. I know what you meant about some people having a much harder life and really, really not deserving it. :( I do hope everything turns out well for her.
Hair! Oy vey! The longer I live, the more I realize there are just somethings very, very few people can do right. One would be anything connected to my hair. Not even normal stylists can really do it right...it's just a select few. Every time I try and save a little money and switch things around, or do it myself, (because, due to murphy's law, the only people who can do my hair are stylists who have to charge approximately 2 times the normal rate...whatever), I end up mad and wondering what the hell possessed me to try that. Ugh.
Do you know this stylist you are going to tomorrow??? Be very careful (although, honestly, very few stylists even attempt color correction...it's hopefully one of the top ones in the salon).
I've decided next month, I'm just going back to my old stylist. So what if I can't pay the mortgage? Who needs a house when your hair looks good??
I'll be thinking about your friend. Is it someone from childhood?
Coloring your own hair is a slippery slope, especially when you're blond. I cringe when I see pictures of myself when I did my own hair. Only because I never got the hang of touching up my roots, so I would do the whole thing over and my hair was just stripped. It's hard being a woman, yo.
Cory - no, it's someone from high school. I just got a call from her husband and the tumor is BENIGN...I was so happy I started crying.
C. - I'm going to someone new because it takes a month to get in to see my colorist...it's better this way because he would lecture me if he knew I colored my own hair. Let's just pray for a good result.
Becky - Thanks for the tip! I'll remember it if I'm brave enough to try it again!
So glad to hear about your friend! : )
Question: How the hell are you going to explain this to your normal stylist? I've always heard that they can tell if anyone else has even touched your hair.
I've been going through my options, "Hey, did I tell you? I was abducted by aliens and they totally did my hair! Weird, huh?" might work. This is the second time in only 4 yrs (yes, i don't learn my lesson) I've gone crawling back to him, begging for forgiveness, so it's going to have to be good this time. You could blame it on new-baby-no-sleep brain. don't know that it would work with an almost one yr old though so i might be sol.
I'm sooooo glad to hear that everything is going to be okay with your friend. Whew!
Ok. Now. Hear me out. Have you lost a lot of braincells from having Jake? When have you EVER colored your own hair????? Sheesh!
(i'm just teasin' of course)
Anyway... I hope your hair turns out the way you want after your appt. Personally, I'm in BAAAAAAAD need of a cut & highlight job!
Love ya!
xoxo
C. - I hadn't been to my normal colorist in a year because of the pregnancy, so he's long forgotten me by now. No worries.
Michele - I've colored my own hair a few times, but never had such a bad reaction when doing it myself. Then again, when I've ever done it before, I've used temporary color so even if the result wasn't what I wanted, I didn't have to stress for long. Could be that my hair changed when I got pregnant -- I've heard of that happening to some women. Maybe now it just doesn't take color like it used to. Who knows. But it's not something I'm willing to risk again!
