I am completely at a loss for what to do about my son...at the age of not-quite three, he is cussing like a sailor! Okay, so it's partly (mostly) my fault. I dropped a lot of S-bombs before the day he ran through the house pushing a car, bumped into a cabinet, and exclaimed, "Oh Shit!" But, I swear, I've been pretty good since then. Still, he won't stop saying the word...along with "Holy crap," which my husband can take credit for.
There is something cute and endearing (and let's face it, funny) about hearing a little kid cuss. The first time you hear it, you can't help but laugh. Problem is, this is an aha! moment where the kid realizes that what he said will get a reaction out of you and then continues to do it. Not good!
So, I've put him in the corner, I've threatened physical harm, I've chastised. None of these things have worked.
We have started trying a little reverse psychology...let him think that "aw shucks" and "Holy cow" are bad to say so that he may start saying them instead. It works somewhat, but he will still throw a few S-bombs in there from time to time. To continue on this path, we have to ignore him when he actually cusses, which is a) very hard to do and b) like condoning the behavior, which goes against what I want to do.
So, let's just say that I won't be surprised when I get a call from J.'s day care teacher because all of the other kids are swearing too. Looking forward to that; really, I am!
